Can a boiler be fitted in a day?

New boiler installations are often light work for a qualified installer, but they’re not always the quickest jobs. There aren’t many occasions to rush gas work, and installing a boiler in a home is certainly not one of them.

That having been said, a same-day boiler installation is often doable, so long as the requirements of the job are straightforward.

Is it possible to install a boiler in one day in 2023?

Absolutely, and this is especially true if the new boiler is going in the same spot as the old one. This means no major rerouting of pipes and chances are good that the new boiler will be suitable in the same space.

However, it’s also possible that a boiler installation can take longer than a day if the requirements surrounding the job are more complicated. Switching from one system to another may mean disconnecting and removing a water tank, or moving the boiler from one spot to another one entirely can mean a host of smaller jobs to get it sorted.

New gas and water pipes need to go in, and the boiler itself needs wiring in at its new location. There may be some light remedial work to the property involved to install the new flue and other safety-critical bits.

All of this alongside the disconnection and removal of the old boiler can mean a day or two longer than a standard like-for-like swap.

If you’re unsure about your job, and if you could possibly be looking at a next day boiler installation, it’s best to contact a qualified boiler installer and ask them to take a look at your property first.

A gas engineer getting to see your current system with their own eyes and envision the job is the best way to be sure of what it will entail and how difficult the work might be for them.

They might spot something that doesn’t stand out to the untrained eye, and they can judge the space available so they can recommend the appropriate boiler for your replacement.

What happens in a boiler installation?

First, your engineer will want to know the specifics of your heating system. As well as the size of your house and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, they’ll also want to know how many radiators you have and potentially the pressure of your water.

Once they’re sure of the new boiler and where it’s going to go, they can get to the job proper. This means uninstalling the current boiler, disconnecting it and removing it to be scrapped. If your boiler is moving location, then there will also be some work needed to remove the now-useless pipes from that location and reroute the water and gas as necessary.

The new boiler will be installed with any of the necessary extras such as a water cylinder—depending on your system—and you’ll be given a rundown of the controls and how to operate the boiler where needed, such as refilling the system.

During your boiler installation, you’ll need to turn the mains water supply off, and you’ll of course have no access to your hot water. It pays to fill the kettle, have any baths and showers, and maybe buy a bottle of water before work takes place.

This is also why many people opt to have their new boiler installed in the warmer summer months.
