When does a new boiler need its first service? With such a new boiler in place, does it still need checking?
You’ve had your boiler installed recently and you’re wondering about when it needs a service. Perhaps it was installed at the beginning of the year, or at the end of last year.
When to get a boiler serviced
Your boiler won’t need a service if it’s been recently installed, and you’d likely be wasting money to have one carried out.
Sometime in the next calendar year is when you need to book your boiler’s first service, depending on the month the work was completed in the previous year. This doesn’t need to be exact, and it’s worth checking with manufacturers to see how much wiggle room they will afford.
Baxi, for instance, allow six weeks as a ‘grace period’ for your annual service.
The ideal time to get a boiler serviced is during the summer months, when the boiler is at its lowest point of usage. This also lets you catch any potential issues with plenty of time to rectify them before the harsher winter period.
However, if you’ve just had a brand-new boiler installation in summer, it stands to reason that you don’t need to book a service until next summer.
How often should you service your boiler?
You should have your boiler serviced once a year to ensure it’s being regularly checked and tested.
An annual service is best practice even if your boiler seems to be working without any issues.
The alternative is ignoring your boiler until something goes wrong, which can then cost a lot more to be repaired and could see you coping without hot water or heating until the job can be completed.
During winter, when gas engineers are at the very peak of their demand, a long wait is all but guaranteed (if there are even any available slots in the engineer’s diary to begin with).
The whole point of a boiler service is to make sure you’re not one of the people clamouring for an engineer when you need your heating the most. A stitch in time saves nine, and you can rest assured that your boiler has been given a clean bill of health for the cold months.
If booking an annual service is something you’d rather not have to think about, some service providers offer annual care plans, for which they will contact you each year to arrange your service.
